Manual bookkeeping underpins all accountancy and finance roles. The Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping provides an ideal entry point for anyone wishing to start a career in accountancy or finance. It may also support career progression for those already in employment by formally recognising their skills in manual bookkeeping. The qualification is open to people whether they are working in finance, returning to work after a break, wishing to change career, or not currently in employment. 

Studying this qualification will help students to develop a strong foundation of bookkeeping knowledge and skills in their current work and beyond. Successful completion of this course will give students greater confidence in bookkeeping, and it will also show them how tasks are automated through the use of accounting software.

This qualification may support people in entering employment or in improving their career prospects. It could also prove to be invaluable for those running their own business.

There are no formal entry requirements but strong numeracy and literacy skills are essential.

Students who wish to build and develop their practical skills quickly should choose the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping.

The purpose of the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping is to ensure that students have the solid bookkeeping skills necessary for most finance roles.

Units Studied / Assessment

• Introduction to Bookkeeping (end of unit assessment)
• Principles of Bookkeeping Controls (end of unit assessment)

This qualification will develop practical accountancy skills in the double entry bookkeeping system and in the use of associated documents and processes. Students will be able to check transactions for accuracy, make entries in appropriate books and ledgers, and calculate sales invoices and credit notes. They will also cover more complex bookkeeping procedures, including dealing with VAT, reconciliation and trial balances, and will develop their understanding of the relationship between the various accounting records.

All assessments in the qualification will be computer-based assessments (CBAs). CBAs are an up-to-date method of assessment that directly reflect the practical tasks that you currently perform or will be performing in the workplace. 

You will be graded as an overall Pass, Merit or Distinction at the end of your qualification.  The pass mark for each exam is 70%.

Commitment - To ensure success in your course, you will be expected to commit to significant home study as well as attendance to college. We generally recommend a minimum of 4 hours per week.

What will this qualification lead to? - The skills developed by studying this qualification will enable a student to seek employment with confidence and/or to progress to the next level of learning. A student completing this qualification will develop the underpinning skills required in all accountancy and finance roles. They will use bookkeeping skills to confidently perform accounting transactions and understand how to process financial information in accordance with set procedures and schedules. This qualification can lead to further study in bookkeeping or accountancy or to employment as:

• a Clerical Assistant or a Trainee Bookkeeper
• an Accounts Clerk or a Finance Assistant or an Accounts Administrator
