A level Results
Staff and students at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College are celebrating good A Level results with 20% of the students gaining A*-A grades, 45% A*-B grades and pass rates of 98%.
639 students took A level examinations in 40 different subjects.
Commenting on the achievements Principal Martin Ward, said:
‘A level results are so important for students in terms of their progression to University or employment. The pass rate is an impressive 98% with significantly high proportions of higher grades with A*-B grades at 45% and A*-C grades over 70%. With the removal of the opportunity to take January modules and the changing national picture for A level achievement I think the results are good’
Underlying the headline rate there are many individual success stories. 7 students who were offered places at Oxford or Cambridge this year have achieved the grades required, good grades have been achieved by our international students and Kotiram Manmuang (from Thailand) who enrolled onto our year 2 A level programme achieved 3 A*grades and one B grade in Maths and Science courses. The college has also recently recruited students with more complex learning needs and 4 such students completed their courses this year and all 4 students achieved A*-D grades at A level.
Morgan Rogers has not only achieved outstanding A level results but has performed extremely well on the STEP papers for Mathematics and has been successful in gaining a place at Cambridge to study Mathematics.
All 6 students who were offered places to study Medicine have been successful in achieving the required grades.
BTEC level 3 results
For the first year the college has entered students for level 3 BTEC courses in ICT and Business. In Business 20 students completed the course with 100% pass rate, and 40% with distinction grades, and in ICT 35 students completed the course with 100% pass rate and 65% with distinction. This is a terrific achievement in our first year of entry.
Chris Fountain the Chair of the Corporation offered his congratulations to students and staff. ‘I am delighted with the high pass rate at A level and the successful introduction of BTEC programmes. Overall results are good and there are many individual success stories where students have achieved their personal best. It is pleasing to hear of the success of the new intake of international students. Such fine achievements reflect the commitment of the students and college staff and build on the excellent work of local primary and secondary schools.’
