3 October 2016

Art and textile students from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and Shrewsbury College – the two members of the newly formed Shrewsbury Colleges Group - triumphed at the finals this year’s Drapers Textile Competition.

Lauren Davies (SSFC) won the prestigious new student prize, ‘The Jackie Ryan Memorial Award.’ The former Shrewsbury Sixth Form College pupil receives a two week placement with textiles company Tweedmill Textiles. While there she will work with designer Gaynor Bowen to create a unique throw/blanket which will be manufactured as a limited edition by Tweedmill Textiles. Lauren has now moved on to study Textiles Design at Birmingham City University.

Clare Williams-Rowe, Textiles teacher says 'Lauren produced a series of 3 woven pieces based on landscapes. The judges particularly liked her contemporary and careful use of colour and her skilful ability to incorporate shapes into the  woven media, Lauren is thrilled with the award which will enable her to gain very valuable work experience.'

Summer-Jane Stevenson-Jones was awarded silver while Heidi Humphreys and Phoebe Lytollis both won bronze awards. All of these three students are continuing their studies at Shrewsbury College.

Curriculum Leader for Creative Arts & Media at Shrewsbury College, John O’Connell adds: “There is significant talent in art, fashion and textiles across the two colleges. We are delighted that it has been so publicly acknowledged at the Drapers Textiles Competition.”
