Record number of Shrewsbury Sixth Form Students achieve three As or higher

A record number of students at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College received their A Levels today, with their results confirming the colleges reputation for academic excellence. More than half of all the grades awarded were high grades, with a record 58 students achieving three grade As or better. The top achievers were Jack Alston, Caitlin Casselman and Eric Cheng, who each gained four A* grades. Jack and Caitlin joined the college from the Priory School, whilst Eric was a former pupil at Meole Brace School. Jack will now take up a place at the University of Birmingham to study Astrophysics, whilst both Caitlin and Eric are off to the University of Cambridge, Caitlin to study Classics at Downing College and Eric to study Medicine at Gonville and Caius College. Nearly 500 students will now progress to university, including nearly 200 progressing to Russell Group Universities.

There were strong performances across Maths and Science, Arts, Languages, Humanities and Social Sciences.  Highlights included an astonishing 33 students gaining an A* grade in A Level Maths, as well as 93% of Textiles students gaining a high grade, leading the way from English Literature (74%), French (65%), Performance Studies (65%), Graphics (61%) and Law (60%). 29 Subjects had a 100% pass rate. There were also outstanding results on the College's BTEC courses, with more than 80% getting Distinctions or Distinction Star grades, the equivalent of A*/A at A Level.  ICT was the best in class, with an incredible 93% Distinction Star grades (A* equivalent), with Business achieving 90%.

James Staniforth, Principal of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and CEO of Shrewsbury Colleges Group, said: “These results are testimony to the hard work of all our students and the excellence and hard work of their teachers and all the student support staff, as well as the support of their families and the excellent preparation for A Levels they received at their high school. I am delighted for each and every student and wish them the very best for the next stage of their life."
